Step 1
Placement Test
To establish a benchmark for the starting level of the students and to place them into the program, ChalkTalk begins with administering a full-length exam at the beginning of the program. All of our exams are third party tests, provided by the original test makers. The most popular exams our partner schools choose for capture grade level improvements in ELA and Math are the PSAT, SAT, and ACT.
Step 2
Standard Class
ChalkTalk generates detailed lesson plans for the teacher, mapped to the school schedule. All lesson plans include the identifiers and descriptions for each state standard covered in the lesson. These lesson plans help the teacher orient and plan for their ChalkTalk classes which are delivered through a 4-step "gradual release" model we've called the ChalkTalk Standard Class: I do, we do, you do, and intervention. These
Step 2.1
Whole Group Instruction(I do)
This begins with the teacher kicking off class by presenting lesson slides on a given topic, and stepping the class through sample exercises.
Step 2.2
Small Group Practice and Instruction(We do)
Students work together in pairs or small groups to complete group practice activities on a given topic. These group activities are generated adaptively by ChalkTalk to match the skill level of each group, ensuring that students are able to successfully complete the exercise.
Step 2.3
Personalized Practice(You do)
Each student logs into ChalkTalk to complete personalized practice questions adapted to their specific skill level on the topics covered in today's class. By scaffolding instruction in this way, ChalkTalk builds confidence by nudging the student along a path of continual success.
Step 2.4
Intervention
After all students complete their required personalized practice sessions, the teachers review the class scores from their dashboard and assigning intervention activities for the student, either online (generated by ChalkTalk), printed offline (generated by ChalkTalk), or from open education resources (which are sourced by ChalkTalk).
Step 3
Review Classes
Every fourth week, ChalkTalk revisits each student's top 3 weaknesses, giving each individual an opportunity to learn topics they have not yet mastered.
Step 4
Exit Test
To measure student progress and efficacy of the ChalkTalk program, a full-length exam is administered at completion. The Exit Text matches the format, duration, and type of the placement test to enable an accurate measure of score improvement.
Step 5
Impact Study
Our team of data analysts and researchers crunch the numbers and produce a beautiful graphic impact study that summarizes your student gains in proficiency and growth against their activity on ChalkTalk. We use the summative placement and exit tests to measure results and report them both in terms of gains in actual test score and in terms of gains in ELA and math grade-level benchmarks. We don't only improve your students' test scores, but we also improve their core ELA and math learning outcomes.
