SAT Scores: What You Need to Know 🎯

SAT Scores: What You Need to Know 🎯

Your SAT score matters for college admissions, scholarships, and even high school graduation. But what’s considered a good score? Let’s break it down.

How is the SAT Scored?

The SAT has two main sections:

  • Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) (Reading + Writing & Language)
  • Math (No Calculator + Calculator)

Each section is scored on a 200–800 scale, and your total SAT score is the sum of both sections, ranging from 400–1600.

📌 No penalty for wrong answers! Always take your best guess!

What’s a Good SAT Score?

A “good” SAT score depends on your goals:

  • 📜 College Admissions – Above 1035 puts you ahead of most test-takers.
  • 🎓 Graduation Requirements – Some states accept as low as 430 EBRW + 400 Math.
  • 💰 Scholarships: Higher scores = better financial aid options.

National SAT Score Averages (Class of 2023)

Section Average Score
EBRW (Reading & Writing) 520
Math 515
Total Score 1035

SAT Score Requirements: College Admissions vs. Graduation

If you’re applying to college, your target score depends on where you want to go.

Sample SAT Score Ranges for Colleges

School Type SAT Score Range
Highly Selective Colleges 1350–1550+
Moderately Selective Colleges 1100–1300
Less Selective Colleges 900–1100

Applying to college? Research target scores. Just need to graduate? Check your state’s minimum requirements.

What If My SAT Score is Too Low?

Scored below your target? No problem! You have options:

  • ✔️ Retake the SAT – Many students improve on their second attempt!
  • ✔️ Targeted SAT Prep – Focus on boosting specific section scores where you need the most points.
  • ✔️ Graduation Alternatives – Some states allow retaking just one section or using GPA/coursework instead.
